The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has announced the ongoing establishment of a new digital technology hub at the University of Ghana, aiming to empower young innovators with a platform to develop Ghana-specific 5G applications.
Now 80% complete, the hub provides young innovators with essential resources to develop use case for every aspect of our lives, from sanitation, health, education, transportation, agriculture, gaming, trade, commerce and more.
At the hub, young innovators can develop ideas without having to rely on established telcos to bring their solutions to market.
The Minister noted, “This hub removes a major barrier, allowing the youth to seamlessly launch their innovations across existing networks for the benefit of Ghanaians.”
According to her, in addition to the hub, the university has allocated land for an upcoming innovation centre, where industry players can test solutions in a campus-based “sandbox” environment before full market rollout.
Technology partners Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and Radisys have also committed to building additional centres in Accra to offer young people even more opportunities to innovate.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful therefore encouraged the youth to take full advantage of this initiative, emphasising that opportunities like these were not available when she was a young person.
She added that there are valuable lessons to be learnt from both success and failure in the innovation journey, because failure only reveals new ways of doing things.
