The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
According to a police statement, the suspect was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Sunday, 15 June 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following what authorities described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on 11 June 2026 at about 6:48 p.m., Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast (UCC) hostel enclave.
Police said the suspect subsequently drove Ms Avinu to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her death.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation, and law enforcement officials have yet to disclose further details regarding the motive or events leading to the victim’s death.
The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which has attracted public attention following reports of the young woman’s disappearance and subsequent death.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and has pledged to provide updates as new information becomes available.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work as efforts continue to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.
