MyMTN and MoMo Apps do not consume Customers’ data bundles, MTN clarifies

MTN has clarified that its MyMTN and MoMo applications do not consume customers’ data bundles, stressing that both platforms are zero-rated despite widespread public perceptions to the contrary.

‎‎The clarification was made during a webinar streamed live on Facebook, where the company addressed concerns about data usage and explained how customers interact with its digital platforms.

‎‎According to MTN, its digital products are designed with the customer in mind, and consumers have readily embraced the convenience of accessing services through digital channels.

‎‎The company noted that while some customers believe using the MyMTN and MoMo apps results in significant data consumption, this is inaccurate because both applications are zero-rated. As a result, customers do not incur data charges when using the two platforms.

‎‎MTN explained that what has changed is customers’ broader digital behaviour. As more people become comfortable using digital services, they are also spending more time online engaging in other internet-based activities beyond the company’s applications.

‎‎The company observed that many users now spend considerable time on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, stream videos, play online games, and consume a wide range of digital content. Unlike the MyMTN and MoMo apps, these activities require internet data and are responsible for the data usage customers experience.

‎‎MTN therefore urged customers to distinguish between the zero-rated nature of its MyMTN and MoMo applications and the data consumed by other online services.

‎The company reiterated that the MyMTN app and the MoMo app themselves do not consume customers’ data bundles, adding that the growing use of other digital platforms is the primary reason many subscribers perceive an increase in their overall data consumption.
