MTN advises customers to use Wi-Fi and midnight bundles for WhatsApp backups ‎

MTN has advised customers to adopt simple data-saving practices, including backing up WhatsApp chats over Wi-Fi or during off-peak hours, to help reduce mobile data consumption.

‎‎Speaking during a live webinar on Facebook, an MTN representative said many smartphone users were missing opportunities to save data by not making use of built-in features designed to minimise consumption.

‎‎”You’re just running away from it and losing value in the process. So it’s important to take advantage of these features,” the representative said.

‎The official highlighted WhatsApp chat backups as one of the areas where customers can significantly reduce data usage.

‎‎”The second point is about backing up your WhatsApp chats. One of the best ways to do this is to use Wi-Fi, since it’s generally more cost-effective. If you have Wi-Fi at home, it’s better to use that rather than relying on your office Wi-Fi,” the representative explained.

‎‎Customers who do not have access to Wi-Fi were encouraged to schedule their WhatsApp backups during off-peak hours.

‎”Alternatively, you can schedule your WhatsApp backup to run at midnight so it uses your midnight data bundle automatically. That’s another smart way to save on data,” the representative added.

‎The webinar also highlighted the growing popularity of video-sharing platforms, particularly TikTok, and the impact they can have on mobile data usage.

‎‎According to the MTN representative, more than 19 million people are actively using TikTok, reflecting the platform’s widespread adoption.

‎‎”We’ve also seen significant usage of platforms like TikTok. More than 19 million people are using TikTok, which is huge. That alone tells you the level of adoption these apps have achieved,” the representative said.

‎‎To help customers manage their data more effectively, the official noted that TikTok includes built-in settings that can reduce data consumption.

‎”On TikTok itself, there is a setting that helps reduce data consumption,” the representative said, encouraging users to enable such features as part of broader efforts to manage their mobile data more efficiently.

‎The advice formed part of MTN’s ongoing customer education efforts aimed at helping subscribers better understand their data usage and maximise the value of their mobile data bundles.
