The Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has signed an off-taker agreement with MES Logistics in a move aimed at revitalising Ghana’s railway sector and strengthening freight transportation across the country.
Speaking to the media, the Minister said the partnership would facilitate the movement of cargo by rail, helping to ease congestion at the nation’s ports and on major highways.
He noted that the initiative is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency and cut the number of road accidents involving heavy cargo trucks.
Mr Bukari Nikpe said the acquisition and deployment of two locomotives and 20 wagons represented a sound economic investment that would enhance industrial growth while generating sustainable revenue for the railway sector through efficient operations and proper maintenance.
He urged the Ghana Railway Development Authority and its partners to manage the new assets prudently to ensure operational efficiency, financial sustainability and the continued expansion of rail services across the country.
The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s railway industry into a key driver of economic growth, trade facilitation and national development, describing the agreement as an important step towards building a more efficient and sustainable transport system.
