MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MoMo) has launched the Ride with MoMo initiative, a nationwide digital payments programme aimed at encouraging commercial drivers across Ghana to adopt cashless fare payments through MTN MoMo Merchant Wallets and the interoperable GHQR payment system.
The initiative, introduced in partnership with the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), targets all categories of commercial transport operators, including online ride-hailing drivers on platforms such as Yango, Bolt and Uber, taxi drivers, trotro operators, commercial bus and truck drivers, as well as tricycle (Pragya) operators.
According to MobileMoney Fintech Limited, the programme seeks to reduce the transport sector’s dependence on cash while addressing common challenges associated with cash transactions, including the lack of change, the risk of theft and delays in completing payments.
The company said the initiative is also expected to promote safer and faster fare payments, improve financial management for drivers and advance financial inclusion through wider adoption of digital payment solutions.

Under the programme, commercial drivers are required to register for an MTN MoMo Merchant Wallet. Once registered, they receive a GHQR code that enables passengers to make payments electronically by simply scanning the code.
Passengers can pay using MTN MoMo, bank mobile applications, fintech wallets, savings and loans applications, and any other payment platform connected to the interoperable GHQR network.
This means drivers can receive payments from customers regardless of whether they use MTN Mobile Money, a participating bank or another compatible digital wallet, making the service interoperable across Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.
MobileMoney Fintech Limited noted that the initiative offers several benefits to drivers, including faster and more convenient fare collection, the elimination of the need to search for change, reduced risks associated with handling cash, secure transaction records and improved business and financial management.
Drivers who participate in the campaign will also have the opportunity to earn rewards and incentives as part of the initiative.
Passengers are likewise expected to benefit from quicker cashless payments, enhanced convenience and improved security, while enjoying the flexibility to pay using their preferred bank application or mobile wallet through the interoperable GHQR platform.
The launch of Ride with MoMo forms part of MTN MoMo’s broader efforts to support Ghana’s transition towards a cash-lite economy and accelerate the digital transformation of the country’s informal transport sector by making electronic payments more accessible, secure and convenient for both drivers and commuters.
