President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s support for Jamaica’s petition to King Charles III seeking reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade, declaring that the quest for justice must be rooted in truth, accountability and reconciliation.
Addressing a special joint sitting of the Jamaican Parliament, President Mahama said Ghana stood firmly with Jamaica in its call for reparations, stressing that the historical injustices of the transatlantic slave trade must be acknowledged and addressed through constructive dialogue rather than retribution.
He emphasised that the pursuit of reparatory justice should not be driven by vengeance but by a shared commitment to confronting historical truths, accepting responsibility and fostering reconciliation between affected nations and peoples.
President Mahama noted that Ghana’s position reflects its enduring commitment to preserving the memory of those affected by the slave trade while supporting global efforts aimed at healing historical wounds and strengthening ties between Africa and the Caribbean.
His remarks reinforced the longstanding cultural and historical connections between Ghana and Jamaica, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in advancing justice, unity and mutual respect.
