Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has directed District Directors of Health Services (DDHS) to take ownership of the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) policy and ensure its effective implementation at the district and community levels.
Mr Akandoh said the success of the policy would depend on health professionals on the ground translating government policy into practical services for communities.
Speaking at the 33rd Annual Conference of the District Directors of Health Services Group Ghana, held under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: The DDHS Driving Free Primary Health Care in Ghana,” he urged the directors to understand and effectively communicate the FPHC policy.
He described the DDHS as the “soldiers on the ground” responsible for turning government policies into healthcare services.
The Minister said FPHC complements the National Health Insurance Scheme and is designed to strengthen preventive, promotive and curative healthcare at CHPS compounds, health centres and polyclinics.
The conference seeks to strengthen district-level leadership and ownership of the policy to ensure accessible, quality and equitable primary healthcare across Ghana.
