AUCB says UG determines students’ final degree classifications

The African University of Communications and Business (AUCB) has explained that it cannot independently determine or publish students’ final degree classifications because the University of Ghana, its mentoring institution, is responsible for calculating their Final Grade Points (FGPs).

‎The university said that although it has students’ scores and cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs), the final degree classifications depend on a formula applied by the University of Ghana.

‎‎It explained that publishing the classifications before the mentoring institution completes its calculations could result in discrepancies if the final figures provided by the University of Ghana differ from the university’s own records.

‎‎According to the university’s representative, AUCB can only publish the names of students expected to graduate, while the University of Ghana provides their final GPAs and degree classifications.

‎‎“Normally, the file the University of Ghana will bring will contain the names, their FGPs and their classes. They do that; we do not,” the representative explained.

‎‎The explanation clarifies the division of responsibilities between AUCB and the University of Ghana in determining the final academic results of students ahead of graduation.

‎‎Under the arrangement described by the representative, the publication of students’ names as prospective graduates does not constitute confirmation of their final GPAs or degree classifications, which are determined through the mentoring institution’s calculations.
