The Managing Director of MultiChoice-Canal+ Ghana, Alex Okyere, has announced a new DStv subscription structure that replaces six existing packages with four simplified plans, with prices starting at GH¢50 per month.
The new packages, which take effect on November 5, are designed to make television content more affordable and accessible to Ghanaian households amid concerns over subscription costs.
Speaking during a media engagement with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Alex Okyere said the new structure was developed following extensive engagements with the ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA).
He explained that the existing Compact, Compact Plus, Premium, Family, Access and other packages would be replaced by four new options: Starter, Select, Sports and Ultimate.
“Our new packs will start at an unbelievable price of just 50 Ghana cedis a month,” he said.
The Starter package, which costs GH¢50 monthly, offers 90 channels featuring a combination of entertainment, movies, children’s programming and sports content.
According to Mr Alex Okyere, the package includes channels such as Africa Magic Epic, Cartoon Network, Z-World, M-Net Movies and La Liga content, alongside free-to-air Ghanaian stations such as TV3 and UTV.
He explained that subscribers would be able to access the channels through their existing DStv decoders without needing to switch between different devices to watch free-to-air television.
The second option, the Select package, will cost GH¢100 per month and offer 123 channels, including M-Net Movies, Africa Magic Showcase, CNN and WWE programming.
Mr Okyere said the package would provide a broader entertainment offering at a lower price than the previous Family package, which he indicated cost GH¢188.
The company is also introducing the Sports package at GH¢250 per month, offering subscribers access to its football content, including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and La Liga.
For premium subscribers, the Ultimate package will cost GH¢570 monthly and include the company’s full range of sports and entertainment content, including golf, Formula 1, tennis, MotoGP and rugby.
Alex Okyere said the restructuring was intended to give consumers more options based on their interests and budgets.
He cited the importance of television in family life, explaining that households have different preferences, ranging from football and drama to children’s programmes and movies.
“These are familiar moments. They are also the reason the details of a television package matter,” he said.
The announcement follows engagements between the government and the company to address concerns about the cost of DStv subscriptions and improve access to legitimate television services.
Mr Alex Okyere acknowledged the role of Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George in the discussions, saying the minister had consistently emphasised the interests of Ghanaian consumers.
He said the new packages were intended to offer greater value while ensuring that households could select plans suited to their viewing preferences and financial circumstances.
