MTN Ghana has provided intensive ICT training to 100 young women, focussing on coding skills.

This initiative aims to equip the participants with the tools they need to compete in the global market and develop solutions to local and international challenges using technology.

The two-week training program enpowers the women to think critically about problems in their communities and devise innovative solutions.

At the MTN Girlcode Hackathon event held at UPSA, Ebenezer Terkpeh, Advisor Portfolio (Education) at MTN Ghana highlighted the MTN Skills Academy, a platform for digital training and career development, and explained that MTN is actively seeking individuals to take up digital courses on the platform.

“We are targeting 100 young women for this training. Upon completion of the ICT courses, we aim to either employ them or connect them to industry leaders,” Terkpeh said.

He also mentioned that the program will reward participants who come up with ground-breaking or innovative solutions during the two-week training.

Terkpeh encouraged more people to sign up for the free courses offered through the MTN Skills Academy, which provides internationally recognised certifications.

In addition, Madam Florence Toffa, CEO of Mobile Web Ghana, explained the importance of focussing on women for this initiative.

She noted that the program aims to break the stereotype that ICT and technology are male-dominated fields.

“It is a global issue, and we are determined to change this narrative by encouraging young women to pursue careers in ICT. The goal is to expose them to the global market, where technology is rapidly becoming dominant,” Madam Toffa said.

She urged women to consider ICT courses as a complement to any other discipline they pursue, helping them stay competitive on a global scale.
