X, formerly known as Twitter, is diving into the live streaming arena, exploring the possibility of integrating this feature into its evolving platform capabilities.

This aligns with Elon Musk’s ambition to transform the platform into an “everything app,” combining a wide range of functionalities, from social media to banking.

On January 7, 2025, Musk tested X’s live streaming feature by broadcasting himself playing a video game for 1 hour and 38 minutes.

The stream generated significant attention, with users engaging in real-time commentary while watching Musk navigate the game.

This experiment offers a glimpse into X’s potential to compete with established live streaming giants like Amazon’s Twitch and Google’s YouTube.

Viewers quickly interacted with Musk, sharing humorous comments and questions. One user suggested changing Musk’s X username to “Percy Verence,” while another enquired about future streams, asking, “When will you play Detroit Become Human?” Enthusiastic fans also praised Musk’s gameplay, with one commenting, “How do you do it without missing a target?”

This successful test highlights X’s ability to offer an interactive and seamless live streaming experience, positioning it to become a serious contender in the competitive live streaming market. Musk’s push to expand X beyond its traditional text and video posts underscores his vision for a more diversified platform.

This test stream follows Musk’s October 2023 experiment, where he live-streamed himself playing Diablo IV, garnering 1,300 viewers. Despite technical glitches, the stream ultimately received 20,000 views. In the January 2025 stream, viewers took notice of improvements, such as enhanced video quality, which could signal X’s readiness to challenge other platforms in the live streaming space.

Musk has long envisioned X as a multi-functional “everything app,” with the potential to blend features of YouTube, LinkedIn, FaceTime, and even banking. As X continues to roll out new features, including live streaming, the platform is positioning itself to reshape the digital landscape and give its users a more immersive and interactive experience.
