MTN Group has unveiled significant leadership appointments aimed at bolstering succession planning, enhancing operational execution, and advancing its Ambition 2025 strategy.

The changes, which take effect in early 2025, span multiple regions and business segments, underscoring the Group’s commitment to strengthening its leadership bench.

Mitwa Ng’ambi, the current CEO of MTN Cameroon, will assume the role of CEO at MTN Côte d’Ivoire from 1 March 2025. She succeeds Djibril Ouattara, who is taking early retirement. Ouattara, a key leader with a notable tenure that included overseeing MTN Congo-Brazzaville, will support Ng’ambi’s transition for several months.

Ng’ambi brings over 15 years of experience in the telecom industry and a track record of transformative leadership.

Since her appointment as CEO of MTN Cameroon in September 2022, she has chaired Mobile Money Corporation, MTN’s fintech arm in the country. Before this, she led MTN Rwanda, where she drove significant achievements, including the renewal of its license and its listing on the Rwanda Stock Exchange.

Her leadership roles at Airtel Tigo in Ghana and Tigo in Senegal further solidify her credentials.

Stepping into the CEO role at MTN Cameroon is Wanda Matandela, currently Chief Commercial Operations Officer at MTN South Africa. Effective 1 March 2025, Matandela will take over the reins in Cameroon, building on Ng’ambi’s successes. With over 20 years of experience, including 13 years in telecommunications, Matandela has excelled in strategic roles in the FMCG and financial services sectors. Since joining MTN in 2018, he has driven significant growth in enterprise business and contributed to stakeholder management.

Effective 1 January 2025, Mazen Mroue, MTN Group’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, will take on additional responsibilities as CEO of Digital Infrastructure (Infraco). In this dual role, Mroue will oversee Bayobab’s mobility and fibre businesses and lead MTN’s data centre strategy, critical to driving AI development across Africa.

With a tenure at MTN dating back to 1998, Mroue has held several senior roles, including CEO and COO positions across Africa and the Middle East. His extensive experience in technology and operations makes him uniquely qualified to deliver on this expanded mandate.

As part of the transition, Frédéric Schepens, current CEO of Bayobab, is departing the group. MTN Group expressed gratitude for his contributions and wished him success in his future endeavours.

MTN Group President & CEO Ralph Mupita commended the outgoing and incoming leaders for their service and dedication. He emphasised the Group’s confidence in its internal succession planning and the importance of maintaining momentum in delivering on its digital and financial inclusion priorities.

These leadership changes signal MTN’s unwavering commitment to driving growth, innovation, and inclusivity across its markets.
