The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has identified persistent fibre cuts as a major operational challenge significantly affecting service delivery and customer experience across the country.
According to Mr Blewett, the scale of the disruptions is substantial, with approximately 157 network sites recently impacted due to fibre damage. He noted that these incidents continue to undermine the stability and reliability of MTN’s network, raising concerns about the broader implications for connectivity.
Speaking at the CEO’s Corner session during the MTN Ghana Accra Media and Stakeholder Forum held on Friday, April 17, the CEO emphasised that the problem goes far beyond isolated outages.
He explained that due to the interconnected nature of MTN’s infrastructure, a single fibre cut can disrupt multiple network sites simultaneously, amplifying the effect on customers.
“It’s not just about cutting fibre to one home,” Mr Blewett stated. “When fibre is cut, it can bring down several sites at once, which creates a much bigger problem and leads to a poor customer experience.”
He warned that unless urgent and proactive measures are taken to address the frequent fibre cuts, the issue will continue to pose a serious threat to seamless service delivery.
Mr Blewett stressed the need for stronger preventive strategies and collaboration to protect critical telecommunications infrastructure, noting that safeguarding fibre networks is essential to maintaining consistent and reliable connectivity for customers nationwide.
