The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government has secured scholarships for more than 30 health tutors to pursue doctoral (PhD) programmes as part of efforts to strengthen specialist nursing education and improve healthcare delivery across the country.

‎The Minister made the announcement during the joint matriculation ceremony for specialised nursing students, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a highly skilled health workforce capable of meeting the country’s evolving healthcare needs.

‎‎According to Mr Akandoh, the scholarships are intended to enhance the capacity of health tutors to train more specialist nurses, helping to address critical shortages within Ghana’s healthcare system.

‎‎He noted that rapid advances in medicine and technology, coupled with changing disease patterns, have increased the demand for highly trained healthcare professionals.

‎‎”Our vision is to produce additional nurse specialists to fill the critical gaps within our healthcare system locally and also support the government’s managed migration policy,” he said.

‎The Health Minister stressed that achieving this objective requires sustained investment in infrastructure, modern equipment, human resources and broader health system strengthening.

‎‎He explained that the scholarship initiative forms part of wider reforms aimed at improving the quality of nursing education, including the implementation of competency-based curricula.

‎”With the rollout of competency-based curricula for nursing education, we have secured over 30 scholarships for health tutors to pursue PhD programmes,” he added.

‎‎The initiative is expected to enhance the quality of specialist nursing training, expand the country’s pool of qualified nurse educators and ultimately improve healthcare outcomes by equipping health institutions with highly skilled professionals.
