The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a robust and inclusive digital ecosystem as it intensifies collaboration with development partners to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

‎The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, reiterated the Government’s commitment during a meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana delegation, which focused on strengthening cooperation on flagship digital initiatives, artificial intelligence (AI) for public service delivery, and the broader development of Ghana’s digital ecosystem.

‎‎The Minister highlighted the role of the UNESCO Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) as a key planning tool guiding the implementation of the country’s digital agenda. He explained that the model has been instrumental in identifying priority intervention areas and distinguishing projects that are ready for deployment from those requiring further refinement.

‎Mr George also provided updates on ongoing efforts to establish a national fintech fund, which is being aligned with the proposed Innovation and Startup legislative framework.

‎According to him, the framework will set out clear eligibility criteria for startups and innovators while providing a legal foundation for the fund to ensure its sustainability and encourage greater private sector participation.

‎During the engagement, the UNDP Resident Representative in Ghana, Mr Niloy Banerjee, outlined progress on three major areas of collaboration. These include the Italian-supported digital flagship project, the Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) digital platform initiative and the Japanese-backed AI for public services programme.

‎Mr Banerjee stressed the need for stronger government participation, including co-financing arrangements, to unlock additional support from development partners and facilitate the successful implementation of flagship digital projects.

‎‎The discussions also explored a proposed AI and digital governance capacity-building programme for the Civil Service. The initiative is expected to strengthen policy development and institutional capacity in emerging technologies through multiple training cohorts, with a deliberate emphasis on promoting gender inclusion.

‎In addition, both parties discussed key digital infrastructure projects, including the Digital Youth Village, as part of broader efforts to expand Ghana’s innovation and technology ecosystem and position the country for sustained digital growth.
