The Chief Commercial Operations Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MoMo), Abdul Razak Issaka Ali, has urged commercial drivers across Ghana to adopt the company’s merchant payment solution, saying it offers lower transaction charges, greater convenience and improved business efficiency.
Addressing the media during the launch of the Ride with MoMo initiative, Mr Issaka Ali said the programme is designed to encourage all categories of commercial transport operators, including ride-hailing drivers on Yango, Uber and Bolt, taxi drivers, trotro operators, tricycle (Pragya) riders and truck drivers, to accept digital payments through dedicated MoMo merchant wallets.
He explained that the initiative seeks to make digital payments more accessible within the transport sector while helping drivers operate more efficiently.
”We are trying to bring the merchant solution and the ease of doing business into the transport space. Drivers are businesses, and we want them to adopt our merchant services so they can enjoy the benefits that come with running their businesses digitally,” he said.
Addressing concerns over Mobile Money transaction charges, Mr Issaka Ali acknowledged that operating digital payment systems comes with costs, making service fees unavoidable.
However, he noted that the merchant wallet attracts significantly lower charges than personal Mobile Money wallets because it is specifically designed for businesses.
”Many drivers currently receive payments through their personal wallets. One of the reasons we are encouraging them to migrate to the merchant platform is that transaction charges are much lower, making it more profitable for them to do business,” he explained.
He assured prospective participants that registering for a merchant wallet is simple and free of charge.
According to him, applicants only need a Ghana Card and, where available, a business registration certificate. They can register at any MTN office or through designated MoMo ambassadors across the country.
”The service is completely free. The SIM card is provided at no cost, and I repeat, at no charge,” he emphasised.
Mr Issaka Ali also appealed to commuters to embrace digital payments, saying the Ride with MoMo initiative offers passengers a faster and more convenient way to pay transport fares.
He noted that passengers frequently experience delays when drivers struggle to provide change after receiving cash payments.
”With Mobile Money, you eliminate the issue of finding change. It makes the entire journey smoother because payment becomes quick and seamless,” he said.
Responding to concerns about increasing incidents of digital fraud, Mr Issaka Ali stressed that customer trust remains the foundation of MobileMoney Fintech Limited’s operations.
He said the company continues to invest heavily in fraud prevention, customer education and collaboration with law enforcement agencies to combat fraudulent activities.
”We are in the business of trust. Fraud prevention is at the core of everything we do. Fraudsters are becoming smarter, but we are also becoming smarter. We will continue to educate our customers on emerging fraud schemes while working closely with the security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
He added that public education on fraud awareness remains an integral component of the company’s digital payment campaigns.
The Ride with MoMo initiative will initially run for three months, after which MobileMoney Fintech Limited will assess its impact before deciding whether to extend the programme.
”We are running this for three months. Afterwards, we will review the results and determine whether to extend the initiative or bring it to an end,” Mr Issaka Ali added.
