The Chief Business Officer of Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), Akosua Blay, has encouraged commercial drivers across Ghana to adopt digital payments, describing cashless transactions as a safer and more convenient way of doing business.
Speaking at the launch of the Ride with MoMo initiative, Ms Blay said drivers who register for an MTN MoMo merchant wallet would not be limited to receiving payments from MTN Mobile Money users alone.
She explained that the interoperable payment system enables drivers to accept payments from customers using bank accounts, fintech wallets, savings and loans institutions and other financial service providers that support the Ghana Quick Response (GHQR) payment platform.
”You are not going to receive money from only MTN customers,” she said. “You can receive money from bank customers, fintech wallets, savings and loans institutions and anybody who is able to pay using GHQR.”
To support drivers, Ms Blay said GhIPSS and MobileMoney Limited would publish a list of participating financial institutions, allowing drivers to easily show passengers the various payment options available.
She described the Ride with MoMo campaign as an important step towards reducing Ghana’s reliance on cash, adding that the initiative should serve as a model for digitising payments in other sectors of the economy.
”Today MTN is focusing on drivers and the transport sector, but there are many other sectors that remain underserved with digital payment solutions,” she noted.
”We encourage MTN and all stakeholders to continue expanding these solutions to other parts of the economy.”
Ms Blay commended MobileMoney Fintech Limited for its continued collaboration with GhIPSS in promoting financial inclusion and accelerating the adoption of digital payments across the country.
She reaffirmed GhIPSS’ commitment to supporting the initiative and pledged the organisation’s continued partnership in ensuring its success.
Addressing the commercial drivers, she urged them to register for an MTN MoMo merchant wallet before leaving the event to enable them to receive digital payments from passengers.
According to her, accepting payments electronically protects drivers from the risks associated with carrying large amounts of cash, including theft, fire and accidental loss.
”The best way to receive your money at the end of every working day is to have it in a digitised form,” she said. “You are not prone to theft, and you are not at risk of losing your money through fire or flooding.”
She therefore encouraged every commercial driver to take advantage of the merchant wallet solution and make digital payments a routine part of their daily operations.
Concluding her remarks, Ms Blay, speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of GhIPSS, thanked MobileMoney Limited for partnering with the organisation to advance digital payments in Ghana and expressed confidence that the Ride with MoMo campaign would deliver lasting benefits to the country’s transport sector.
