BP has agreed to sell its mobility, convenience and electric vehicle (EV) charging business in Austria to volenergy AG as the energy company continues to streamline its global portfolio and strengthen its downstream operations.
The transaction covers 250 BP-branded retail sites across Austria, including around 115 company-owned and franchise-operated locations, as well as the company’s EV charging infrastructure and fleet business. Following completion of the deal, the retail network will continue to operate under the BP brand through a licensing agreement.
As part of the transaction, BP will sell its entire shareholding in BP Retail Austria GmbH, subject to regulatory approvals. The sale also includes the Austrian fleet business and BP’s interests in three non-operated joint ventures: Erdöl-Lagergesellschaft m.b.H., Autobahn-Betriebe Gesellschaft m.b.H., and TLM Tanklager Management GmbH in Linz.
The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement.
Richard Harding, BP’s Interim Executive Vice President for Downstream, said the transaction aligns with the company’s strategy of focusing investment on markets and assets where it can remain most competitive.
”By concentrating our capital on the assets and markets where BP can be most competitive and best serve customers, we are strengthening our balance sheet and creating a stronger downstream portfolio,” he said.
Melanie Milchram-Pinter, BP’s Head of Country for Austria, said the company had built a strong mobility and convenience business in the country over several decades and expressed confidence that volenergy AG was well placed to continue its development.
The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
The Austrian divestment follows BP’s sale of its mobility and convenience businesses in the Netherlands in 2025, Türkiye in 2024 and Switzerland in 2022 as the company continues to reshape its downstream business.
BP’s aviation business and Castrol operations in Austria are not included in the transaction.
