The Government has secured US$1.7 billion for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, with preparatory works gathering pace ahead of the commencement of the flagship infrastructure project under the Big Push Programme.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the 176-kilometre, six-lane dual carriage expressway remains the government’s most significant road infrastructure project aimed at transforming transportation between Ghana’s two largest commercial centres.
He disclosed that as of 22 July 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces had cleared 122 kilometres, representing about 70 per cent of the 120-metre-wide right-of-way within just 12 weeks. The remaining corridor is expected to be cleared by the first week of September 2026.
Dr Forson also announced that US$1.7 billion had been deposited into a dedicated Accra-Kumasi Expressway Account at the Bank of Ghana. According to him, the funds have been ring-fenced and will only be utilised after the award of the main construction contract.
The Finance Minister said compensation assessments, environmental impact studies, feasibility studies, engineering designs and other preparatory activities are progressing concurrently. He added that the feasibility study and detailed engineering design are expected to be completed by the end of August 2026, while procurement for the main construction contract is scheduled to begin in September.
Government, he noted, is confident that all the prerequisites for the project will be completed in time for President Mahama to officially cut the sod for construction to commence.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to approximately two hours upon completion.
Beyond improving connectivity, the project is designed to enhance road safety, reduce traffic congestion and lower transportation costs for commuters and businesses.
The expressway will also incorporate modern transport infrastructure, including grade-separated interchanges, bridges, intelligent transport systems, electronic tolling facilities, emergency response centres and designated rest areas.
The project forms a central pillar of the government’s Big Push Programme, which seeks to accelerate economic growth through large-scale investments in strategic national infrastructure. Government believes the expressway will strengthen trade, improve the movement of people and goods, and support long-term economic development across the country.
