Two suspects who allegedly robbed a mobile money agent in broad daylight on Tuesday, at Asuboi in the Eastern Region have been beaten to pulp by a mob.
One of the robbers is feared dead.
The two, riding a motorbike, attacked a mobile money agent at gunpoint and attempted to abscond with an amount of about Ghc2,000 but they were chased down by some youth in the area on a motorbike.
The robbers were captured in a Rambo-style and were beaten mercilessly.
An eyewitness, Kojo Minta said one of the robbers became motionless, but it was not clear if he was dead or not.
Both suspects have however been rushed to Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.
Robberies on mobile money agents in the country has been on the rise in the past few months.
In some cases, agents have been shot dead, while others suffered various degrees of injury after losing huge amounts of money.
In the most recent one, robbers in Kumasi succeeded in take a whopping GHC200,000 away in just one incident.
The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) have called on the Ghana Police Service to intervene to help protect its members.
Another mobile money agents group, the Mobile Money Advocacy Group of Ghana (MOMAG) have also called on banks to provide them with bullion vans to convey their daily sales to the banks, just like they do for churches and some other businesses.
Meanwhile, mobile money market leader, MTN MobileMoney Limited said they are working out a solution that would involve the police to ensure full protection for mobile money agents.
Another mobile money player, Zeepay is also in the process of providing at least 100 secure mobile money kiosks to be distributed to agents across the country, with plans to scale it up in the coming years.
