Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has warned broadcasters against allowing artificial intelligence to weaken human editorial judgement and professional responsibility.
She acknowledged that AI could significantly improve newsroom efficiency by helping journalists transcribe and summarise interviews and perform other routine tasks.
However, she said the technology also presented risks if systems produced inaccurate information, exposed confidential material or fabricated statements.
“If the system misrepresents a source, exposes confidential material, or invents a statement, the broadcaster, not the software provider, will face the consequences,” she said.
Shamima Muslim was speaking at the Conference on AI, Cloud and Future Broadcasting.
She said broadcasters must therefore ensure that human editorial judgement remains central to the use of AI in newsrooms.
“AI should help us work faster, but it must not weaken our commitment to accuracy,” she said.
She also urged media organisations to ensure that AI strengthens African expression and expands the capacity of professionals rather than eliminating professional responsibility.
The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson said Ghana’s national AI ambitions should also find expression in the broadcasting sector.
She urged broadcasters to move beyond asking what AI can do for them and instead determine what they want the technology to achieve for African broadcasting and what boundaries should govern its use.
