The incumbent President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been re-elected as President with a landside victory in the Monday, June 30, 2025 polls.

Dwumfour garnered 445 votes, representing 64.49% of the total valid ballots cast, while his sole competitor, Charles Yao Mawusi polled 245 votes representing 35.51%.

This landslide victory underscores the confidence and trust members of the inky fraternity have reposed in the incumbent president, under whose leadership the GJA mounted the strongest defence journalists including boycott on politicians and legal suits against persons who violated that rights of journalist.

The election, which witnessed a strong turnout of over 800 accredited members across the country, was marked by a keen contest, particularly from Charles Mawusi, who entered the race late but injected a renewed sense of vigor and excitement into the contest, forcing Dwumfuor to recalibrate his strategy and secure fresh endorsements to maintain his footing.

Beside Dwumfuor, other national executive slots filled during the election were Vice President, General Secretary, National Organising Secretary, National Treasurer and Public Affairs Officer.

In the race for the Vice Presidency, Rebecca Ekpe of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation beat Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group in a close contest to become the new Vice President, succeeding Ghana News Agency’s Linda Asante.

Sulemana Mustapha of the Graphic Communications Group is the newly elected Organising Secretary of the GJA. He beat the former Eastern Regional Chairman, Maxwell Kudekor of the Multimedia Group to clinch the vacant position.

For the position of General Secretary, former Public Affairs Officer of the GJA, Dominic Hlordzi beat Akwasi Agyemang of the Multimedia Group to become the new scribe of GJA, while, Zadok Kwame Gyesi of the Graphic Communications also beat Caesar Abagali of Ghana News Agency to become the new Public Affairs Officer.

Again, Bertha Badu-Agyei beat Theodora Amedetor to become the new National Treasurer of the Association.

In all, 12 candidates vied for six national executive roles and 49 others competed for regional offices.

The newly elected executives will serve a three-year term, and expectations are high that they will steer the GJA through critical reforms and advocacy in the evolving media landscape.

Going into this election, journalists’ welfare was top on the agenda for all the contestants, and that is something the fraternity will be looking forward to in the next three years.
