BD to invest $3bn to expand US medical manufacturing

Becton Dickinson and Co has agreed to invest $3 billion to expand manufacturing of essential medical products in the United States, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday.

‎‎Trump said more than $1 billion of the investment would be directed to Nebraska, where BD plans to increase production of medical products including syringes and needles made with US steel.

‎‎The investment is linked to the Trump administration’s planned tariffs on medical devices, which the president said would be in place by the end of the year. The administration has been pushing manufacturers to increase domestic production of products considered important to US healthcare supply chains.

‎‎The Nebraska expansion will include increased production of syringes, needles and other medical products, according to Trump.

‎‎The White House separately said BD would invest $110 million to expand prefillable syringe production at its plant in Columbus, Nebraska, creating about 120 jobs. The investment would be in addition to an earlier $35 million investment at the facility.

‎‎BD had not immediately commented on the announcement, according to Reuters.

‎‎BD is one of the world’s largest medical-technology companies and has been reshaping its portfolio this year following the completion in February of the separation of its Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions business into Waters.
