The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has declared its full support for Ghana’s petition to the African Union against xenophobia and has unconditionally endorsed the Accra Next Steps Commitments on Reparatory Justice.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development after participating in meetings of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Sierra Leone ahead of Sunday’s meeting of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
According to the Minister, the Council’s decisions represent a significant endorsement of Ghana’s diplomatic efforts to promote continental unity, protect the rights of Africans and advance the campaign for reparatory justice.
Mr Ablabkwa welcomed the Council’s backing, describing it as an important step towards addressing xenophobia across Africa while strengthening the continent’s collective pursuit of justice for historical injustices.
He also expressed appreciation for the Council’s endorsement of the Accra Next Steps Commitments on Reparatory Justice, which seek to sustain Africa’s advocacy for reparations through coordinated action among member states.
The Foreign Affairs Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to working with its regional and continental partners to advance the ideals of African unity and integration.
”We shall keep working tirelessly towards the attainment of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s dream of a united, tolerant and prosperous Africa,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to deliberate on key regional issues, including political cooperation, economic integration, peace and security, following the recommendations submitted by the Council of Ministers.
