The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding electricity access nationwide, announcing plans to connect an additional 343 communities to the national electricity grid by the end of 2026 as part of its Rural Electrification and Urban Intensification Programme.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the initiative forms part of the Government’s broader agenda to improve access to reliable electricity and support socio-economic development across the country.
He stated that ongoing rural electrification projects will extend power supply to 343 communities before the close of the year, bringing electricity to more households, businesses and public institutions.
Dr Forson also disclosed that electrification works covering more than 400 additional communities are currently underway, with a particular focus on the northern regions where access to electricity remains a priority.
To accelerate implementation, the Government has engaged four local contractors to undertake electricity extension projects in the Oti, Volta, Central and Savannah regions.
According to the Finance Minister, the projects are expected to be completed within the next six months, further advancing the Government’s objective of achieving universal access to electricity.
The Rural Electrification and Urban Intensification Programme remains one of the Government’s key infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving living standards, promoting economic activity and ensuring more communities benefit from reliable power supply.
