The Government has allocated GH¢350 million to strengthen emergency relief, improve drainage infrastructure and support flood response measures following recent flooding incidents across the country.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the funding forms part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and protect lives and property.

‎‎Dr Forson announced that the government has also established a National Disaster Management Committee, chaired by the Minister for the Interior, to coordinate emergency response operations and implement flood mitigation measures nationwide.

‎‎He said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) responded to floods, rainstorms, fires and building collapses during the first half of 2026, providing relief assistance to more than 36,000 disaster victims.

‎‎According to the Finance Minister, NADMO also dredged and desilted more than 1,000 drains, conducted nearly 4,000 public education activities and managed over 900 emergency incidents during the period under review.

‎‎On fire safety, Dr Forson said the Ghana National Fire Service responded to 3,270 fire outbreaks and 364 road traffic and rescue incidents in the first six months of the year, saving hundreds of lives.

‎‎He added that the Service carried out more than 8,000 public fire safety education programmes and conducted nearly 8,000 fire safety inspections and audits to improve compliance with safety standards.

‎‎The Finance Minister also highlighted the work of the Narcotics Control Commission in combating illicit drug trafficking.

‎‎He disclosed that the Commission made 92 arrests and initiated 38 criminal cases during the review period. It also carried out more than 13,000 cargo and vessel examinations, resulting in the seizure of over 1,600 kilogrammes of narcotic substances with an estimated value exceeding US$2.5 million.

‎Dr Forson said the government’s investments in disaster management, fire safety and law enforcement reflect its commitment to improving public safety and strengthening national resilience against emergencies.
