The Government has announced a strengthened national response to flooding, with enhanced forecasting systems and a comprehensive emergency flood control programme aimed at protecting lives, property and critical infrastructure.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said Government had reinforced flood forecasting and early warning systems across Greater Accra, the White Volta Basin and other flood-prone areas.
He said the improved systems are intended to enhance preparedness and provide timely alerts to communities at risk of flooding.
Dr Forson also announced the launch of the 2026 Emergency National Flood Control Programme, under which Government will intensify dredging and desilting of drains, expand drainage infrastructure, strengthen early warning systems and remove structures obstructing waterways.
He noted that the intervention forms part of broader efforts to reduce the impact of recurrent flooding, particularly in vulnerable communities.
The Finance Minister further stated that Government would collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce planning regulations and prevent unauthorised developments within waterways and floodplains.
According to him, stricter enforcement of planning laws is essential to improving flood resilience and safeguarding communities against the increasing risks posed by extreme weather events.
The measures form part of the Government’s wider infrastructure agenda outlined in the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, which seeks to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve environmental management across the country.
