More than 350 small businesses have been enrolled onto a digital commerce platform developed to help Ghanaian enterprises participate more effectively in the digital economy.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed this during the Government’s Accountability Series.

He said the initiative was being implemented through the Ghana-India-Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence, with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The platform, developed under the MSME Gateway and e-commerce initiative, is now being operated through the Ghana Enterprise Authority.

Sam George said 110 trained digital champions from business advisory centres across the country were supporting participating businesses.

He said the initiative was part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that digitalisation generated tangible economic opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The minister said the digital economy could no longer be treated as an exclusively technology-sector issue because businesses across agriculture, retail, logistics, manufacturing and services increasingly depended on digital platforms.

He also highlighted the transformation of Ghana Post from a traditional postal operator into a modern logistics and e-commerce enabler.

According to him, Ghana Post’s modernisation is built around five key pillars: courier services, EMS, parcels, secure document delivery and last-mile logistics.

He said the transformation was designed to support the growing e-commerce ecosystem by providing the logistics infrastructure needed to move goods and documents across the country.

Sam Nartey George said the government’s digital economy agenda was therefore focused not only on building technological infrastructure but also on creating the systems that would enable Ghanaian businesses to sell, transact and deliver products in an increasingly digital marketplace.

He said strengthening MSMEs through digital platforms would help local enterprises expand their markets and participate more competitively in the emerging digital economy.
