Former President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor has called for the creation of a “borderless awareness” among Africans to deepen understanding and cooperation across the continent.
He said Africans should be able to understand and engage with developments in other African countries without being limited by national boundaries.
Speaking at the 2026 Broadcasters Convention, Mr Kufuor clarified that his concept of a borderless Africa did not mean the removal of national sovereignty.
“By borderlessness, I do not mean the erosion of national sovereignty or the disappearance of hostages,” he said.
Rather, he said, the objective was to create a shared African consciousness through which citizens could better understand developments across the continent.
Mr Kufuor cited digitalisation and emerging technologies as important tools for achieving this goal.
He said digital platforms could cross borders instantly and allow information, knowledge and opportunities to move more easily between African countries.
He said the media had a central role to play by connecting young people and helping citizens understand the societies and developments around them.
Mr Kufuor said initiatives such as the Africa Public Interest Media Initiative could bring together the power of the media and technology to promote stronger connections among African citizens.
He said such efforts could help the continent overcome old barriers and enable Africa to participate more confidently in globalisation.
