Micron Technology has announced an investment in Indium Corporation to expand critical minerals refining and manufacturing operations in Rome, New York, as part of efforts to strengthen the United States’ semiconductor supply chain.

‎Under the agreement, Micron will provide strategic funding to Indium Corporation and enter into a long-term supply agreement for high-purity minerals used in advanced memory manufacturing, according to a company press release.

‎The partnership is expected to restart domestic processing of critical minerals at Indium Corporation’s facility in Rome, reducing reliance on concentrated global refining capacity.

‎The investment forms part of Micron’s plan, announced in July, to commit up to $3 billion to strengthen the US semiconductor supply-chain ecosystem.

‎‎“Advanced memory manufacturing depends on a reliable supply of critical minerals,” said Ben Tessone, Micron’s senior vice-president and chief procurement officer.

‎‎“Securing these inputs is essential to Micron’s long-term growth and technology roadmap,” he added.

‎Ross Berntson, president and chief executive officer of Indium Corporation, said the partnership builds on more than 90 years of the company’s operations in Central New York.

‎‎“Together, we’re expanding the supply of semiconductor-grade critical minerals and taking an important step forward for domestic manufacturing,” he said.

‎Micron has separately outlined plans to increase its total investment in US fabrication plants and technology to more than $250 billion through 2035.

‎‎The company operates a fabrication complex in New York State, while Indium Corporation’s facility in Rome is also located in the state.
