OpenAI is expanding advertising on ChatGPT to 26 additional countries, bringing the total number of markets covered to 89 as the artificial intelligence company seeks to grow its advertising business ahead of a possible initial public offering (IPO).
The company reported in August that its advertising business had reached an annualised revenue run rate of $1 billion, highlighting the growing contribution of advertising to its revenue operations.
OpenAI began testing advertisements on ChatGPT in the United States earlier this year. Since then, more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on the platform, according to the company.
The latest expansion includes 14 additional Latin American countries, among them Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, following earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil.
Other markets joining the programme span Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. They include Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Advertisers entering the new markets can access ChatGPT advertising services through technology partners or use the self-service option available through Ads Manager on the company’s platform.
Advertisements will appear only on ChatGPT’s Free and Go subscription plans, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers will continue to use the service without advertising.
The expansion follows OpenAI’s introduction of artificial intelligence-powered advertising tools in September, alongside tests of business-sponsored agents with selected advertisers in the United States.
