John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, marking a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen specialised cardiovascular healthcare in Ghana.

‎‎The newly commissioned state-of-the-art facility is expected to enhance the country’s capacity to provide advanced cardiac care by restoring essential services and expanding access to lifesaving heart and stroke interventions.

‎‎The commissioning ceremony was attended by government officials and key stakeholders in the health sector, who described the facility as an important investment in improving healthcare delivery and addressing the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases.

‎‎The laboratory forms part of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, an initiative aimed at improving access to specialised medical services for Ghanaians.

‎‎Government says the facility will help increase the availability of advanced diagnostic and interventional procedures for patients requiring specialised heart care, reducing delays in treatment and improving health outcomes.

‎‎The commissioning also forms part of a broader strategy to decentralise specialised healthcare services across the country. Similar comprehensive cardiology centres are currently under development at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

‎‎The government says the expansion of these centres reflects its commitment to bringing specialised healthcare closer to communities and ensuring that more Ghanaians have access to quality cardiovascular services regardless of their location.

‎‎The establishment of the new cardiac catheterisation laboratory is expected to improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and stroke while strengthening Ghana’s overall healthcare infrastructure.
