Safaricom has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing financial inclusion and economic participation across Africa through the development of connected digital commerce ecosystems.
Speaking at the Africa Fintech Forum 2026, Peter Gichangi, Head of Digital Commerce and Loyalty at Safaricom, underscored the transformative role of digital commerce in expanding access to financial services and supporting economic growth.
According to Mr Gichangi, digital commerce extends beyond the simple buying and selling of goods and services online. Rather, it involves creating integrated ecosystems that enable individuals, businesses and communities to participate fully in the economy.
”Digital commerce is not just about buying and selling online. It is about building ecosystems that enable full economic participation,” he stated.
He highlighted Safaricom’s suite of digital platforms, including M-PESA, My OneApp, M-PESA Business Hub and Daraja, as key enablers of seamless access to a broad range of financial services. These services include payments, savings, credit, investments and business solutions designed to support individuals, enterprises and public sector institutions.
Mr Gichangi noted that the interconnected nature of these platforms is helping to unlock new opportunities for growth, innovation and inclusion across diverse segments of society.
He further observed that Africa is home to the world’s youngest and fastest-growing digital economies, presenting significant opportunities for technology-driven transformation.
As part of its long-term strategy, Safaricom is focused on leveraging technology to simplify access to financial services and improve customer experiences. The company aims to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030 through the delivery of intuitive digital solutions that address the evolving needs of consumers and businesses.
The remarks reinforced Safaricom’s vision of harnessing technology to create sustainable economic opportunities and deepen financial inclusion across the continent.
