Government of the Republic of Ghana has hailed the successful conclusion of the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice, describing it as a historic milestone in the global campaign for justice and redress for the transatlantic enslavement of Africans.
The conference follows the landmark adoption of a Ghana-led United Nations resolution that declared the transatlantic enslavement of Africans the gravest crime against humanity, a development widely regarded as a significant step towards advancing the cause of reparatory justice on the international stage.
According to the Government, the conference achieved a major breakthrough by bringing together leaders of the global reparatory justice movement and world leaders under a unified agenda.
For the first time, participants agreed to end fragmentation within the movement and pursue a common framework, shared purpose and collective resolve in advancing reparatory justice.
A key outcome of the gathering was the adoption of the “Accra Next Steps Commitments”, a comprehensive framework intended to guide future efforts towards securing reparatory justice for affected communities and nations.
The commitments are expected to serve as a blueprint for coordinated action and policy implementation aimed at addressing the enduring consequences of the transatlantic slave trade and colonial exploitation.
Organisers said the commitments would provide a roadmap for building a more equitable and inclusive global order founded on the principles of fairness, justice and shared prosperity.
The Government of Ghana, led by President John Mahama, expressed appreciation to all delegates, dignitaries and stakeholders who participated in the conference and contributed to its success.
Officials described the conference as a defining moment in the pursuit of historical justice, expressing optimism that the momentum generated would strengthen international efforts to achieve meaningful reparatory outcomes.
“Victory beckons,” the Government declared, signalling confidence that the growing global consensus on reparatory justice will translate into tangible action in the years ahead.
The Next Steps Conference is expected to reinforce Ghana’s position as a leading advocate for reparatory justice and a key voice in efforts to address historical injustices affecting people of African descent worldwide.
