The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has been invited to participate in the upcoming Safe African Helmet Initiative (SAHI) Summit, which will be held in Accra in August and is expected to bring together representatives from about nine African countries to discuss helmet safety and broader road safety initiatives.
‎The invitation was extended during a courtesy call on the Minister by a delegation from the FIA Foundation and Transaid, led by the FIA Foundation’s Programmes Manager, Aggie Krasnolucka.
‎‎During the meeting, Ms Krasnolucka highlighted the FIA Foundation’s commitment to promoting safer, affordable and accessible mobility in line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, which seeks to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 per cent by 2030.
‎‎She explained that the Foundation has established a Helmet Testing Laboratory to help distinguish genuine, certified helmets from counterfeit products, with the aim of improving helmet standards and enhancing the safety of motorcyclists and other road users.
‎‎The SAHI Summit is expected to provide a platform for participating countries to exchange experiences, strengthen collaboration and explore practical measures to improve helmet use and road safety infrastructure across the continent.
‎‎Receiving the delegation, Mr Bukari Nikpe welcomed the initiative and underscored the critical role of quality helmets in preventing fatalities and serious injuries on the roads.
‎‎He observed that greater public awareness of the importance of wearing certified helmets would save many lives and reduce the devastating impact of road crashes.
‎‎The Minister also noted that the Government is undertaking a nationwide public education campaign on the recently enacted Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1153) and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), aimed at improving compliance with road safety laws and promoting responsible road use.
‎‎Mr Bukari Nikpe reaffirmed the Ministry of Transport’s commitment to collaborating with the FIA Foundation and Transaid to advance road safety interventions and strengthen efforts to protect road users across Ghana.
