Elon Musk hails Anthropic as AI industry leader amid intensifying competition

Elon Musk has described artificial intelligence startup Anthropic as the current leader in the AI industry, offering rare public praise for a rival as competition among the world’s leading AI companies continues to intensify.

‎‎The billionaire entrepreneur made the remark on Thursday in response to a post on X discussing the performance of leading AI models, stating that Anthropic was “obviously” ahead of its competitors. Musk, however, did not elaborate on the reasons behind his assessment.

‎‎His comments come at a time when Anthropic has established itself as one of the strongest challengers to OpenAI, Google and Musk’s own AI company, xAI.

‎‎Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives led by Chief Executive Dario Amodei, Anthropic has gained significant recognition through its Claude family of AI models, particularly among software developers seeking advanced coding assistance.

‎‎The company’s momentum accelerated late last year following the release of Claude Opus 4.5, an advanced AI model widely praised for its coding capabilities. The model was rapidly adopted by software developers and AI researchers, with many technology professionals switching from competing AI assistants and describing themselves as “Claude-pilled”.

‎‎Anthropic further expanded its market reach with the introduction of Claude Cowork, a platform designed to help businesses and non-technical users automate research, writing and workplace tasks. The launch broadened the company’s appeal beyond software engineering and strengthened its position in the rapidly growing enterprise AI market.

‎‎Its Claude Code coding assistant has also gained considerable traction across Silicon Valley, reinforcing Anthropic’s standing as one of OpenAI’s most formidable competitors.

‎‎The company’s rapid growth has attracted significant investor interest. Anthropic confidentially filed for a United States initial public offering (IPO) in June, shortly after completing a funding round that reportedly valued the company at approximately US$96.5 billion, positioning it for what could become one of the largest AI-related stock market listings.

‎‎Musk’s endorsement is notable given his direct involvement in the AI race through xAI. His acknowledgement of Anthropic’s progress highlights the increasingly competitive landscape as leading AI firms continue to develop more capable models for consumers, businesses and software developers.
