The National Identification Authority (NIA) has warned that photocopying, scanning or visually inspecting a Ghana Card for transactions is now illegal under the new National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026 (LI 2523).
Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate at the NIA, said the prohibited practices could attract a fine or a prison sentence.
He stressed that institutions and individuals involved in transactions must comply with the requirements of the new legislative instrument and desist from photocopying, scanning or conducting ocular verification of the Ghana Card.
The warning forms part of efforts to ensure compliance with the amended regulations governing the use and verification of Ghana Card information.
Mr Darlas urged the public and organisations that rely on the Ghana Card for transactions to take note of the new requirements to avoid breaching the law.
Under LI 2523, failure to comply with the restrictions on Ghana Card verification could result in criminal sanctions, including fines or imprisonment.
The NIA therefore cautioned all users of the Ghana Card to ensure that their verification practices conform to the provisions of the new regulations.
