Ghana’s only telecom industry interconnect clearinghouse (ICH), Afriwave Telecom has built a modernized washroom and urinal for St. Martins Senior High School at Nsawam, Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region.
The company also provided the school with a mechanized borehole for the supply of quality water for their daily use.
The gesture forms part of Afriwave’s corporate social responsibility (CSR), which focuses on enriching the lives of people in the communities in which it operates. It is also in line with Afriwave’s commitment to touching lives and giving back to society.
St. Martins Senior High School is a Catholic government school with a student population of about 2,800 and one of the best second cycle schools in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
At the commissioning of the facilities, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Afriwave Telecom, Francis Poku noted that this is not the first time Afriwave has taken up such initiatives, saying “Afriwave believes in assisting the schools in our communities by giving them the necessary support to improve the wellbeing of students.”
He said the poor state of the school’s washroom before the Afriwave’s intervention, was what drove the company to help, adding that a functional washroom is a basic requirement of hygiene in a school with a large student population like St. Martins SHS.
Francis Poku stated that public schools need more infrastructure and functional amenities to support teaching and learning in a conducive environment, and therefore the construction of the washroom and water borehole was a confirmation of Afriwave’s commitment of supporting quality education in Ghana.
“Afriwave is interested in quality education, which is the backbone of every economy and that is why we have focused our energies in assisting schools to improve their infrastructure and create conducive environment for both students and teachers,” he said.
He urged the students to take their education seriously and take good care of the facilities for their own good.
Headmaster of the school, Paul. A. Agbakpe thanked the management and staff of Afriwave Telecom for taking off a major burden from his shoulders, as getting the students a functional washroom and urinal facilities was one of his main objectives since assuming office.
He promised to take good care of the facilities and called on corporate organizations to support the school in whichever way they can.
