Ecobank Ghana has donated relief items valued at over GHS257,000 to support individuals and families in communities affected by the recent floods that impacted Accra and several other parts of the country.

The donation, made under the Bank’s “Ecobank Stands With Accra” initiative, was presented at the Jubilee House as part of ongoing national efforts to provide relief to affected communities.

The relief package comprises:

  • 3,567 units of medicines across 18 essential drug categories
  • 1,000 bags of sachet drinking water
  • 195 student mattresses
  • 250 blankets
  • 10 bales of assorted used clothes

The items were carefully selected in consultation with medical experts and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support immediate humanitarian needs.

Speaking during the presentation, Mrs Charlotte Amanquah, Regional Head of Consumer and Commercial Banking, who represented the Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Mrs Abena Osei-Poku, said the donation reflects the bank’s commitment to standing with communities during times of hardship.

“The recent floods have left many families facing significant challenges. As a bank deeply rooted in the communities we serve, we believe our responsibility extends beyond banking. Through the ‘Ecobank Stands With Accra’ initiative, we are pleased to support ongoing national efforts to provide relief and comfort to affected families. We remain committed to standing with our communities in times of need and contributing to their recovery.”

Mrs Amanquah commended the government of Ghana, NADMO, the security services, and all stakeholders involved in coordinating relief efforts and supporting affected communities.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Government of Ghana, the Legal Counsel to the President, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, expressed appreciation to Ecobank Ghana for the timely intervention and commitment to supporting vulnerable communities affected by the floods.

“We are grateful to Ecobank Ghana for this timely intervention and the compassion you have shown towards affected communities. The government’s response alone is not enough, which is why partnerships such as this are so important. We commend Ecobank for standing with Ghana at a difficult time and encourage other corporate organisations to emulate this gesture in support of affected families,” she said.

Mrs Appiah-Oppong conveyed the appreciation of His Excellency the President, the Vice President and the Chief of Staff to Ecobank Ghana for its support towards the national relief effort.

She commended Ecobank Ghana for the donation and encouraged other corporate organisations to support ongoing relief efforts across the country.

This intervention is consistent with Ecobank Ghana’s longstanding commitment to supporting communities during crisis. Over the years, the Bank has responded to several national emergencies and disasters.

In 2020, Ecobank supported displaced persons in Northern Ghana following floods caused by the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. In 2021, the bank provided relief support to residents of Keta and surrounding communities affected by tidal waves. Following the Appiatse explosion in 2022, Ecobank made a substantial contribution to the Appiatse Support Fund. Most recently, in 2023, the bank supported communities in the South and Central Tongu Districts affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Through these interventions, Ecobank continues to demonstrate its commitment to standing with communities in times of need and contributing to national resilience and recovery.
