The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has announced the launch of a “Red Band” protest, set to begin on October 10, 2024, to demand urgent action against illegal mining activities, also known as galamsey.
The protest, which aims to draw attention to the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment, will serve as a peaceful yet powerful reminder of the ongoing destruction of rivers, forests, and livelihoods.
The group’s statement highlights that illegal mining continues to ravage the environment, polluting water bodies, destroying farmlands, and threatening the future of communities. Despite repeated public outcry, government action remains insufficient, according to the coalition.
“We mourn for our livelihoods, our rivers, our forests, and for the future,” the statement reads. The “Red Band” campaign seeks to unite Ghanaians in a peaceful protest demanding accountability from the authorities.
The coalition believes that enough is enough and that urgent action is needed to protect the country’s natural resources.
How the Protest Works
The “Red Band” protest calls on participants to wear red armbands or headbands as a symbol of solidarity. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to tie red bands to their vehicles, including cars, motorbikes, and bicycles. The coalition also urges supporters to take their protest online by sharing their participation on social media using the hashtags:
#StopGalamseyNow
#SaveOurLand
#SaveOurFuture
The protest, which is expected to gain widespread support across the country, is intended to continue indefinitely until the coalition sees meaningful change in the fight against galamsey.
The group is calling on every Ghanaian who cares about the environment
