Ghana is expanding its efforts to create a more affordable and borderless telecommunications environment across West Africa through regional roaming arrangements.
Minister Samuel Nartey George said Ghana’s free roaming agreement with The Gambia was fully operational.
He disclosed that memoranda of understanding had also been signed with Liberia and Sierra Leone, while technical testing was underway with Burkina Faso.
The initiative is expected to make communication more affordable for citizens travelling across participating West African countries.
Mr George said the regional integration of telecommunications services was part of the government’s broader digital connectivity agenda.
He also disclosed that Voice over LTE (VoLTE) adoption in Ghana had increased significantly.
According to him, VoLTE traffic had risen from 7 per cent to 22.43 per cent of total traffic and now reached more than 8.4 million subscribers.
VoLTE provides clearer voice calls while improving data performance compared with legacy voice technologies.
The minister said the developments demonstrated the importance of modernising Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure while strengthening regional digital integration.
He said affordable and reliable connectivity was essential to trade, tourism, business and social interaction across West Africa.
