Meta has launched Facebook Verified, a free verification badge designed to confirm that a Facebook profile is operated by a real person through a selfie-based identity verification process.
The company said the new verification system requires users to submit a short video selfie, which is compared with existing profile photos to confirm a match. The process is free of charge and typically takes only a few minutes to complete.
To qualify, users must be at least 18 years old, have accounts in good standing, comply with Facebook’s Community Standards—particularly those relating to fraud, scams and deceptive practices—and show no signs of inauthentic behaviour.
Unlike Meta’s subscription-based verification service, the new Facebook Verified badge is available at no cost. However, it is currently limited to personal profiles and is not available for Facebook Pages or ProMode accounts.
Initially, the verification badge will appear on user profiles as well as across Facebook Marketplace, Dating and Groups. Meta said it plans to extend the badge to Feed posts as the rollout progresses.
The company is introducing Facebook Verified in phases, beginning with selected markets before expanding the feature globally.
Meta said the badge confirms only that a profile belongs to a real person who has completed the selfie verification process and meets the platform’s trust and safety requirements.
It stressed that the badge should not be interpreted as an endorsement of a user or a guarantee of their trustworthiness, adding that all verified users remain subject to Facebook’s Community Standards and Commerce Policies.
