Micron to invest $10bn in new US research lab

Micron Technology plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade to build a new research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, as the US memory-chip maker seeks to accelerate advances in memory technology and strengthen domestic semiconductor production.

The facility, known as Micron Research Labs, will focus on advancing memory technologies, developing computing systems and supporting future chip manufacturing, the company said on Thursday.

‎‎Micron said the laboratory would bring together customers, academic institutions, government and other participants in the semiconductor ecosystem to pursue new technological breakthroughs.

‎‎The investment is in addition to more than $250 billion the company has separately committed to manufacturing and research and development across the United States.

‎‎Micron Research Labs will also be connected to the company’s research and technology operations in Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan, creating a broader international research network.

‎‎The planned investment comes as demand for advanced memory chips continues to rise, driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure and increasingly demanding AI workloads.

‎‎Micron, along with major rivals Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, has benefited from growing demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which enables AI accelerators to process and access large volumes of data rapidly.

‎‎The expansion of AI data centres has made HBM an increasingly important component of advanced computing systems, intensifying competition among major memory-chip manufacturers to develop higher-performance technologies.

‎‎The investment also aligns with the US government’s push to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains.

‎‎The Trump administration has made strengthening US chip production a priority as Washington seeks to support economic growth, improve supply-chain resilience and maintain the country’s technological lead in artificial intelligence.

‎‎Micron’s latest commitment therefore adds to broader efforts by the company and the US government to expand semiconductor research, development and manufacturing capacity on American soil.
