Which Nigerian Mobile Network Offers the Best Value in 2025? A Deep Dive into Call and Browsing Rates (Now in USD)

In Nigeria, where over 200 million mobile subscribers depend on voice and data services daily, how far your airtime stretches is more important than ever. While telecom providers like MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9Mobile continue to advertise promotions and bonus-heavy bundles, it’s their base tariffs that truly determine value for money.

Following a tariff adjustment approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January 2025, several networks revised their plans—discontinuing bonuses and tweaking their pricing. As of July 2025, here’s how each network stacks up, with all conversions done using an exchange rate of ₦1,500 = $1.00 USD.

Glo Super Talk

Call Rate: $0.015 per minute (15.5 kobo/sec)
Daily Access Fee: $0.01

Glo edges out the competition in voice affordability through its Super Talk tariff, charging a minimal $0.015 per minute after a daily access fee of $0.01. It’s ideal for users who make regular daily calls.

Its Talk On plan is a moderate choice, charging $0.022 per minute with no access fee.

Glo

Browsing Rate: $0.001 per MB

For users who browse the internet with their airtime balance instead of dedicated data bundles, Glo is the clear winner, offering the lowest browsing rate in Nigeria at just $0.001 per MB across all tariff plans.

Airtel OverJara Xtra

Recharge Bonus: 200% (100% airtime + 100% data)
Effective Bonus Airtime Call Rate: $0.034 per minute
Bonus Data Usage Rate: Deducted at 15MB/second

Airtel’s OverJara Xtra offers the most generous recharge bonuses. For instance, a recharge of $0.067 gives users an extra $0.067 in airtime and $0.067 worth of data. However, the cost of using the bonus data is steep, and bonus airtime calls cost more than regular rates.

GLO

  • Super Talk: $0.015/min + $0.01 daily fee
  • Talk On: $0.022/min, no fee
  • Browsing (PAYG): $0.001/MB
  • Bonus plans: Discontinued

User Experience:
Yusuf Nasiru, a civil servant in Lagos, recalls how Glo’s previous bonuses on the Berekete plan made his $3.33 recharge last for weeks. “Now I don’t get bonuses, so I’ve cut back on calls.”

MTN

  • Pulse: $0.023/min (most affordable MTN plan)
  • BetaGist & XtraValue: $0.030/min
  • Browsing (PAYG): $0.002/MB (among the most expensive)

Note:
MTN has discontinued bonus-friendly plans like BetaTalk.
Zubair Onireke, a student at the University of Ilorin, said: “BetaTalk gave us real value, but they removed it.”

AIRTEL

  • SmartTalk: $0.025/min (cheapest Airtel plan)
  • OverJara Xtra: $0.030/min (regular), $0.034/min (bonus)
  • SmartGist: $0.033/min
  • SmartLife: $0.040/min
  • Browsing (PAYG): $0.0031/MB (highest among all networks)

Bonus Perks:
Only OverJara Xtra offers airtime + data bonuses.
However, bonus data is drained at 15MB/second, which users say is practically unusable for streaming or video calls.

9MOBILE

  • MoreLife Complete: $0.0066/min + $0.0051 daily fee (most affordable)
  • 9Konfam: $0.0212/sec (bonus rate: $0.083/min)
  • MoreTalk: $0.040/min (most expensive)
  • Browsing (Bonus Data): $0.0467/MB

Bonus Perks:
9Konfam offers 9x airtime bonuses, but charges high rates on bonus usage.

User Concerns:
Abdulganiyu Salaudeen, a fashion vendor in Lagos, said: “I stopped getting bank alerts due to 9Mobile’s frequent outages.”

🧾 Quick Summary (Base Rates in USD)

Network Lowest Call Rate Browsing Rate (MB) Bonuses?
Glo $0.015/min $0.001
MTN $0.023/min $0.002
Airtel $0.025/min $0.0031 ✅ (OverJara Xtra)
9Mobile $0.0066/min $0.0467 (bonus) ✅ (9Konfam)

While all four networks have adjusted their tariffs post-NCC review, Glo remains the most budget-friendly for both calls and browsing without bonuses. If you’re looking for high bonuses, Airtel’s OverJara Xtra is a decent option—just be aware of the premium cost when using the bonus airtime and data.
