MTN Cyberattack: 5,700 Ghanaians potentially affected

MTN Ghana has disclosed that initially findings show that about 5,700 MTN Ghana customers may have been affected by the recent cybersecurity incident that happened to the company.

In a statement dated April 28, 2025, the MTN said “…we have not been able to ascertain the full extent of the incident, [but] early indications are that about 5,700 MTN Ghana customers’ data may have been affected.”

The company said they will contact the customers involved and assist them.

The statement, signed by Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Afriyie Waife only mentioned the impact in Ghana, but did not say anything about whether customers of any of the other 19 markets MTN operates in were affected by the recently cybersecurity incident.

It however assured the customers that they are working closely with leading cybersecurity experts and are conducting a forensic investigation to assess any impact to in line with their established security protocols.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and we are devoting the requisite resources to resolve this matter,” it said.

The Ghana telecoms market leader still insisted that, even though they have not been able to ascertain the full impact on the incident, they can assure that public that their core systems are still intact and all their platforms remain fully operational, as they continue to monitor their environment closely.

“The confidentiality, integrity and availability of our systems remain central to how we
operate and serve our customers,” it stated.

As a reminder, customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow
regular security measures, such as:
▪ To mitigate any fraudulent consequences, a fraud alert can be placed on an individual’s
credit report at any of the major credit bureaus.
â–ª Keep MTN, MoMo and banking apps and devices updated.
â–ª Use strong, unique passwords for accounts and change them regularly.
â–ª Be cautious of unexpected messages and do not click on suspicious links.
â–ª Do not disclose information such as passwords, PINs and OTP when asked to do so by
phone, text message or email.
â–ª Activate multifactor authentication where available.

MTN also took the opportunity to assure customers that the privacy of customer information is a top priority, and they remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of their systems and the trust placed in them by our customers and other stakeholders.

“We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully. We understand that this incident may raise concerns, and we are committed to providing you with the updates and guidance required during this time,” it said.

Customers are also encouraged to reach out to MTN via short code 100 with any questions and requests for additional information.
