The Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, has announced that the regulator will publish telecom operators’ performance data, insisting that transparency is key to addressing persistent service quality challenges across the country.

Speaking on the growing concerns over poor telecom services, Mr Fianko said the NCA will make public, network by network, how each operator is performing against its obligations, stressing that “the service Ghanaians pay for must be the service they receive”.

He acknowledged that complaints about dropped calls, slow internet speeds, and unreliable coverage – especially in peri-urban and rural areas – have become the most consistent issue facing the sector.

“Across this country, the public is telling us in increasingly clear terms that the service they are paying for is not the service they are receiving,” he stated.

According to him, despite Ghana achieving over 95 percent to 99 percent coverage, significant gaps remain in actual service quality, with some communities still experiencing little to no usable connectivity.

Describing the situation as a major threat to public trust built over decades, the NCA boss said the authority is stepping up regulatory action to restore confidence in the industry.

“We have tightened our quality of service benchmarks. We will publish performance data so that the public can see, network by network, how each operator is performing,” he said.

He added that the regulator will not hesitate to enforce compliance where necessary, signalling a tougher stance on operators who fail to meet required standards.

As part of broader reforms, the NCA is also preparing to roll out a nationwide consumer education campaign to empower users with information on service quality expectations.

Mr Fianko disclosed that earlier this year, mobile network operators were directed to present detailed explanations for declining service quality, along with concrete plans to address the issues.

He noted that the NCA has since reviewed those submissions and is satisfied that operators have outlined credible roadmaps, including capacity expansion, new site development, transmission upgrades, improved power reliability, and deployment of advanced technologies.

The move to publish performance data, he emphasised, will not only drive accountability but also enable consumers to make informed choices, positioning them as active participants in improving service delivery across Ghana’s telecom sector.
