The minister for communication, digital technology and innovations, Sam Nartey George, has assured employees of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) that no jobs will be lost despite the devastating floods that disrupted operations at the state-owned technology hub, while challenging management to transform the company into a commercially viable enterprise.
The assurance comes barely two weeks after the Ministry overturned a decision by GDCL’s management to suspend the employment contracts of all staff following the June 29 floods that damaged parts of the Accra Digital Centre.
The Ministry described the move as unacceptable and directed management to immediately reverse the suspension, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting jobs as recovery efforts gathered pace.
Addressing the board, management, and staff on Monday, July 13, 2026, the minister sought to put lingering uncertainty over employees’ future to rest.
“We are not laying off any staff of GDCL, whether temporarily or permanently, because of the flood. Every one of you is assured of the continuity of your jobs.”
But Mr George made it clear that the government’s support comes with expectations, saying the flooding should become a turning point for repositioning the company as a financially sustainable business rather than a return to normal operations.
“Let’s take this as the reset of the reset. Every staff member will have to play their role because it’s not going to be business as usual.”
The minister said the ministry would continue to support the centre’s recovery while strengthening corporate governance, improving operational efficiency and restoring long-term sustainability.
He argued that GDCL possesses sufficient assets to become a profitable state enterprise and signalled that management would be held accountable for delivering that outcome.
“With the assets you hold, there is no excuse for GDCL not to be profitable… It will not fail, not under my watch.”
GDCL hosts technology firms, start-ups, and innovation-focused businesses at the Accra Digital Centre. While operations were disrupted by the June 29 floods, the centre has continued recovery efforts as the government works to restore confidence among tenants, investors and the wider digital ecosystem.
