Orange Business has acquired a cloud-native private 5G platform from domestic company Obvios to strengthen its secure and sovereign connectivity offering for critical infrastructure, defence and public safety sectors.
The acquisition brings Obvios’ Dome technology into Orange Business’ Defense and Security division, expanding its portfolio of sovereign private 5G systems. The company expects the move to broaden the range of secure and resilient connectivity services it can provide.
Orange Business said the Dome platform is designed to meet the connectivity requirements of critical infrastructure across sectors including defence, domestic security, energy, transport and emergency services.
The system combines private 5G connectivity with high-bandwidth, low-latency edge computing capabilities, according to the company.
Nassima Auvray, head of Orange Business’ Defense and Security unit, said the acquisition would strengthen the company’s portfolio and expertise, particularly in hybrid network deployments.
She said the deal would accelerate the development of private 5G capabilities and allow Orange Business to customise services to the requirements of individual sectors.
Orange Business expects the Dome platform to have particular applications in operating drones and autonomous systems. It also sees potential uses in providing connectivity for military bases and field operations, alongside applications across other critical sectors.
The acquisition forms part of Orange’s Trust the Future strategy, unveiled earlier this year, and is expected to expand the company’s sovereign private 5G capabilities.
