President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Model Market in Juapong in the North Tongu District, signalling the start of a major project aimed at strengthening local commerce, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in the Volta Region.
The sod-cutting ceremony formed part of the President’s two-day Resetting Ghana tour of the Volta Region.
Addressing residents and stakeholders, President Mahama said the proposed facility would serve as a modern economic hub that would support farmers, traders, entrepreneurs and small businesses. He explained that the market would extend beyond traditional trading activities by providing infrastructure for storage, processing, packaging and distribution, while also offering access to digital commerce platforms and financial services.
The President said the project forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to drive inclusive economic development through the 24-Hour Economy programme, which seeks to increase productivity, expand employment opportunities and improve the business environment across the country.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to accelerating development in the Volta Region through investments in critical sectors, including roads, healthcare, education, agriculture, transport, markets and agro-industrial projects.
President Mahama also highlighted Juapong’s strategic location and economic potential, expressing confidence that the town would develop into a major commercial and industrial centre within the region.
The Juapong Model Market has been designated as a Category Four Market—the highest classification under the 24-Hour Economy programme—underscoring its strategic importance to the Government’s economic transformation agenda.
It is expected to be one of the largest facilities developed under the flagship initiative.
